KP's wish: To have 10,000 Test runs against his name
NEW DELHI:
Kevin Pietersen just can't stay away from Delhi. The Daredevils batsman will not be taking the field for his T20 team — at least not this season — but has already made his second trip to the country in less than a month.
The last time Pietersen was seen in India, he was hobbling around with a knee brace. On Friday, as he came in to keep some sponsor commitments, Pietersen sounded confident that he was on the right track to recovery. "I have been off the brace for the last 10 days. The body is healing well but I didn't want to take any risk by taking part in the Champions Trophy. I will be ready by the time Ashes comes around," Pietersen said on Friday.
In the absence of Pietersen, the Daredevils are looking a completely different outfit.
Pietersen, though, refused to take all the credit for Daredevils' success last year. "The absence of one person doesn't make a big difference. It's flattering to hear that but I don't think that's the only reason. We also didn't have Viru (Sehwag) for the initial matches. Morne (Morkel) and Roelof (Van der Merwe) had domestic commitments. Also what happened to Jesse (Ryder) made us slow starters. But the boys are gaining in confidence and mathematically, we can still make it," an optimistic Pietersen said.
The Natal-born batsman has 7,499 runs in 94 Tests at an average of 50. After patching up with the English Cricket Board last year, Pietersen has set his sights on 10,000 runs in Test cricket. "I would like to score at least 10,000 Test runs. I am 2,500 runs away from it and hopefully I will get there," the 32-year-old said.
Pietersen also had a word of praise for Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, who has been in phenomenal form. "The reason why CSK are so successful is because Dhoni is such a clever skipper in Indian conditions. CSK have also got quality spinners for the tracks on which they are playing. Their overseas recruits including Mike Hussey and even coach Stephen Fleming, have made significant contributions."
