Sachin makes up for his age with commitment: Jonty Rhodes

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:
Mumbai Indians fielding coach Jonty Rhodes made most of his mini-IPL break by travelling to Kovalam, Thiruvananthapuram to inaugurate a surfingevent.

The former South African cricketer showed that he was as deft on the surfboard as he was on the cricket field. After having two stints in the Kovalam sea on Friday, the 43-year old took time out to speak to TOI on IPL, on fielding standards and India's upcoming tour to South Africa. Excerpts:

The T20 meet so far has been bit of up and down affair for Mumbai Indians. You play Chennai Super Kings next...

Look CSK is a very good side, but we are not that weak either. We have the advantage of playing on our home ground, the Wankhede, and you know the Mumbai crowd is so passionate about cricket that it won't be easy for Dhoni and his men to beat us in our den.

Are you happy with the way Mumbai Indians have fielded thus far this season.

I am happy with our show in the field so far. I don't really have to worry about the fitness of team as we have a physio to deal with that. But fielding is very much related to fitness and when you deal with a 40-year old and a couple of 38-year olds in the team, fitness and fielding are a bit of a concern. But I have learnt to deal with them.

You have been with Mumbai Indians for a while now and worked closely with Sachin Tendulkar. Is he as good on the field as he was when you joined the team?

He is a legend and he has always stood there for the team. But age may have restricted some of his movements on the field. But he makes up for it by giving hundred per cent on the field. He knows what role he has to play for Mumbai Indians.

India will be touring South Africa for a Test series. How would they fare in your home conditions?

Touring abroad will be a different challenge. And Dhoni's team will have to try really hard if they have to outperform South Africa. It won't be a cakewalk for Dhoni & Co.
